Is Invisalign Right for Me? By Andrew Mortensen, DDS on February 28, 2022

Invisalign alignersCrooked, misaligned teeth can often make people feel self-conscious about the appearance of their smile. Unfortunately, alignment issues do more than detract from the beauty of the smile. Misalignment can make it more difficult to bite, speak, and care for the teeth. There are several orthodontic techniques to correct the position of the teeth and jaw, but people often wonder which is best.

One popular teeth straightening treatment is Invisalign®. Invisalign uses clear aligner trays to realign the teeth and jaw. Individuals in the Fountain Valley, CA, area often ask Dr. Andrew G. Mortensen, “Is Invisalign right for me?” Here we present some key questions to consider when determining if Invisalign is an appropriate treatment option for our patients.

What Type of Malocclusion Problems Are Present?

When considering whether Invisalign is a suitable option for our Fountain Valley patients, we must first consider the type and severity of their malocclusion problems. It is essential that we only offer Invisalign treatment if it will successfully correct the position of the teeth and jaw to provide patients with a straighter smile. Fortunately, Invisalign can correct many of the same issues as traditional orthodontic treatments, including an overbite, underbite, or crossbite. As long as orthodontic issues are not severe, Invisalign should be a viable treatment option.

Are You Looking for a Discreet Teeth Straightening Treatment?

One thing that sets Invisalign apart from traditional braces is their appearance. Invisalign is often referred to as “invisible braces,” because the aligners are very difficult to see when a person has them in place. Invisalign aligners are made of a clear plastic. The aligners blend in against the teeth, making them a great option for patients who want a discreet teeth straightening treatment.

Do You Want a Teeth Straightening Treatment with Added Conveniences?

Another reason to consider Invisalign over traditional orthodontics is the added conveniences of treatment. Invisalign aligners are not permanently affixed to the teeth. Patients are able to remove aligners as needed to eat, drink, and brush and floss the teeth. Because Invisalign aligners are removable, our Fountain Valley patients can enjoy these benefits of treatment:

  • No food restrictions
  • Easy to maintain good oral hygiene habits
  • Easy to care for aligner trays
  • Ability to remove aligners for special events

Will You Wear Your Invisalign Aligners Exactly as Directed?

The fact that Invisalign aligners are removable is an advantage for most, but it can be a disadvantage for those who are not disciplined, or for younger patients who are not prepared for the responsibilities of Invisalign. Invisalign treatment will not be successful if aligners are not worn exactly as directed. While it is okay to remove aligners to eat or care for the teeth, or even on rare occasions for a special event like a wedding, they must be worn between 20 and 22 hours a day for treatment to be a success. If patients cannot follow treatment instructions, they may be better suited for traditional braces.
