Dental crown placed over a tooth

Dental Crowns

When teeth become badly damaged or decayed, they can compromise the health, function, and brightness of your smile.

Dental crowns are custom-made dental restorations designed to fit over the natural tooth structure, providing strength and reinforcement.

Dentist Andrew G. Mortensen offers dental crowns at our Fountain Valley, CA, practice to restore our patients' oral health and appearance...

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Improved Oral Health

Left untreated, dental damage and decay can severely compromise your oral health, leading to increased discomfort, infection, and even tooth loss. After removing existing decay and damage from your affected tooth, Dr. Mortensen will use a crown to protect the remaining structure.

Enhanced Aesthetics

Modern dental materials, such as porcelain, mimic the color and translucency of natural enamel. As a result, crowns placed by your Fountain Valley dentist are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth. Because they cover the entire surface of the tooth, these restorations can also mask cosmetic imperfections and improve the look of your smile.

Long-Lasting Solution

Crowns are made with high-quality materials like porcelain and are built to withstand years of chewing. With proper care and maintenance, dental crowns can last up to a decade. Our dentist will provide detailed instructions to help keep your restoration looking and feeling great for as long as possible.

Types of Dental Crowns

temporary crowns

Temporary Crowns

Temporary crowns are used to cover your tooth after it has been resized in preparation for your crown. Dr. Mortensen provides temporary crowns to patients who are waiting for their permanent restorations to be fabricated by our trusted lab.

Permanent Crowns

Unlike temporary crowns, permanent crowns are designed to stay in place for the next several years. Dr. Mortensen will design your custom restoration to match the color, texture, and translucency of your surrounding teeth.

implant-supported dental crowns

Implant-Supported Crowns

Our Fountain Valley, CA, dentist also offers implant-supported crowns for patients with missing teeth. Implant-supported crowns are attached to dental implants. Dental implants are surgically placed in the jawbone and can help prevent the bone loss that typically occurs when you lose a tooth.

How long will it take to restore my teeth?

Treatment Timeline

Before beginning your treatment, we will assess your oral health using our advanced 3-D digital x-ray and cone beam computed tomography technology. We will carefully assess your images to ensure that your affected teeth are structurally strong enough to support dental crowns.

In most cases, dental crown placement can be completed in two office visits. Here are the basic steps you can expect during treatment:

Our crowns can be designed and placed in just two appointments.
Our crowns can be designed and placed in just two appointments.

Tooth Preparation

First, our Fountain Valley, CA, dentist must remove damage and reshape the tooth. This helps your new restoration fit just right. Dr. Mortensen uses conservative methods to leave as much healthy structure intact as possible. If you have sensitive teeth or dental anxiety, we can provide oral conscious sedation to help you relax during this step.

Dental Impressions

Once the tooth is prepared, our team takes impressions using dental putty. These are then sent to our dental lab partner, where they will be used to create your custom dental crown. Our dentist will provide you with a temporary crown to protect your tooth until you receive your permanent restoration.

A skilled ceramist crafts your custom dental crown according to the size, color, and shape recommended by your Fountain Valley, CA, dentist. This process usually takes about two weeks.

When your permanent crown is complete, the lab will ship it to our office. You will be scheduled for a second appointment, during which Dr. Mortensen will bond it into place. He will assess the fit and check your bite to ensure proper function.
